She was named "Ga Ga" (pronounced Gag Uh) by her eldest grandchild. Before her marriage she was a clerk in a flower shop and a legal secretary for F. Lyman Windolph in Lancaster PA.

She wrote newspaper articles concerning El Capitan coffee for the owner, her brother, Robert L. Gerhart in 1935.

She was a Welcome Wagon hostess in Lancaster PA for 25 years until 1960 and the founder of the Welcome Wagon Newcomers club.
