Lyman Ackerman served along side his fahter, Robert Ackerman (A Soldier of the Revolutionary War), and his brothers John W. and Daniel Child Ackerman.
He was the grandson of Increase Graham Child who served as a Captain in both the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars.
His grandsons, George Washington and Nathaniel Perkins and his great-grandson, John Wesley Perkins, all served in Co. H, 10th NY Heavy Artillery in the Civil War.

He was best known in Jefferson County as a Minister of the Methodist Church where he did not receive pay for his services.
