ELDER CAROL O. BASSETT

CANISTEO [Steuben Co., NY] - Elder Carol O. Bassett, 84, of State Route #248, entered into rest Thursday (Dec. 13, 2001) at St. James Mercy Hospital, following a short illness.

He was born Aug. 6, 1917 in Greenwood to Ray and Sally Osmin Bassett. He married Essie Zeh on Aug. 24, 1941 in Palmyra. He was predeceased by a daughter, Becky Bassett in 1969.

He was a graduate of Greenwood Central School, Class of 1937. He was a member of the Community of Christ Church of Greenwood, formerly known as the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, where he was ordained as Priest in 1937 and as an Elder in 1949. He served the church as pastor for over 40 years. He had been a member of the Greenwood Central School Board of Education.

He had worked at the former Corbin Woodworking Corp. for over 23 years, had been a school bus driver for Jasper Central School where he had also worked as a custodian. He had driven a HAT bus for over three years and had lived on his farm since 1945, where he enjoyed farming. Carol enjoyed his family and was a vital part in assisting his wife in raising over 20 foster children.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, he is survived by three daughters, Lorraine (Richard) Warriner of Greenwood, Linda (Patsy) McCaffery of Andover and Carolyn (Terry) Smith of Grove City, Ohio; one son, LeRoy (Rebecca) Bassett of Titusville, Fla.; one sister, Cora Burley of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, including granddaughters, Samantha Leya Bassett and Tabatha Marie Bassett Bryant who were under the care of their grandparents until leaving home; five step grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the H.P. Smith & Son, Inc. Funeral Home, 29 East Main St., Canisteo. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Community of Christ Church in Greenwood. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery in Greenwood.
