Worlds first recipient of the first fully self contained artificial Heart. On July 2nd, 2001, Robert Tools, a retired telephone company worker, made History by recieving the first self contained artificial Heart, named the AbioCor. The AbioCor performed so well that the functioning of Mr. Tools' other organs actually improved. And unlike the older Jarvik model of artificial Hearts which required the recipient to be tethered to an immense machine, the Abiocor was powered by external and internal Lithium batteries which allowed for complete freedom of movement. Mr Tools was able to go fishing, to the market, and do any other normal daily activities. Although the AbioCor Heart performed superbly, sadly the rest of Mr. Tools' organs began to fail. He developed bleeding in his abdominal area that was due to the continuous anti coagulation problems that Mr. Tools had from the onset related to his pre existing severe and chronic medical condition. He died from Multi System Organ Failure on November 30th, 2001. It was completely unrelated to the AbioCor artificial Heart. Mr. Tools had survivied for 151 days post transplant, and in the words of one of his surgeons Dr. Rob Dowling "Mr. Tools and his family members are heroes. Their willingness to be the first to participate in the AbioCor clinical trial could potentially pave the way for a revolutionary treatment option for advanced heart disease."
