He attended the Vermont Episcopal Institute, (1863-66), a private school in England, (1866-67), Kimball Union Academy New Hampshire, in 1870 and entered his father’s mill business at Sanford, Maine, in 1874. He was president of the Sanford National Bank in 1896, chairman of the Maine commission to the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, in 1904 and a Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of Main Governor Fernald in 1909. In 1917, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixty-fifth and Sixty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1921. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his manufacturing and banking interests until his death at age 83.
