A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Drafted at the stated age of thirty-one in Carlisle October 16, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Camp McClure in Chambersburg November 1 as a private with Co. F, 158th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). Elected captain, he was then promoted to the rank of major to date November 21, 1862, and honorably discharged with the regiment August 12, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of thirty-three in Oakville, Cumberland County, August 25, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 4 as a private with Co. He died while in a coma precipitated by "paresis (senile)." His death certificate lists an October 21 birthday but also reports him dying at the age of 84-7-19 that calculates to the birth date shown above.
