Ira Westley Beatty was born in 1861 to Samuel Calhoun Beatty Jr.(1821 - 1899) and Mary Elizaabeth (Wentworth) Beatty. On 23 Jan 1897, at 36 years of age, (newspaper accounts on Sunday Jan. 24 said "around 30 years of age") Ira was the fireman on the train that derailed at Paint Creek Trestle, plunging into the valley below. He was one of four (all crew) killed; many passengers were injured but lived. He lived near Lamey's Church. He left behind a wife Mary Hays Beatty, two daughters, Myrla Meriam, and Bertha Beatty DeRoss, and one son, Charles, only 1 1/2 years old.
