WW II Fighter Pilot & flight instructor in U.S. Army Air Corps, Carpenter, Union member [and proud of it], Salesman, Band Music Teacher, professional Jazz musician, University professor and in retirement, a Real Estate Appraiser.

In 1938 Bill & his brother, Elwood won partial music scholarships to Murray State College, Murray, Ky. They raised money to pay for their remaining expenses by playing saxophone & clarinet [Bill], trombone & trumpet [Elwood] in various Big Bands on weekends, holidays & throughout the summer. Plus they would do any odd job to make some cash...... One story dad enjoyed telling: Elwood bought some baby chicks intending to raise them & sell to butcher at maturity. Elwood kept them in a box under his bed until the owner of his boarding house discovered them & said they go NOW & so will you if ..........

DEGREES: Bachelors degree in music from Murray State College, KY; Masters degree from Notre Dame University, IN. [dad said he was the 1st protestant to recieve a Masters degree from Notre Dame]; Doctorate degree from University of Georgia, GA.

Work: Dad always had at least 2 jobs at a time & usually more. Teaching was his passion therefore he always had a teaching job. His primary jobs were, music teacher in Elkhart county, IN schools then in the Palm Beach county, FL school system. He was Principal of Palm Beach Elementary & JR High schools in Palm Beach, FL. A Professor at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia. Other various jobs he worked at the same time: Music director at Northwood Baptist then Memorial Presbyterian church in FL. & Presbyterian church GA., gave private music lessons, sold insurance, house siding & cars, worked as a Union carpenter, director of Sweet Adeline & barbershop choirs, sold real estate & did house appraisals, etc.

Fun: Dad had endless energy & would finally sit down to relax in front of TV at about 8 p.m. He would stay up until the 11 o'clock news was over then to bed. He woke no later than 7:30 a.m. He loved painting houses [especially trim & moldings]. When he had nothing else to do, he would walk around the house with a paint can & brush in hand, searching for something to touch up.

One lifetime spouse, Betty J [Holdeman] & 4 children. He was as perfect as any father could be. He was a strict disciplinarian but never abusive and he loved his family unconditionally.

Ethical, honest & always willing to help anyone if they were willing to work at helping themselves too. As I age, my love, admiration & respect for him continues to grow. He had respect for everyone regardless of background, job, education, income or physical/mental abilities. Anyone who worked & was trying to take care of themselves, family or others had Bill's respect. He truly considered everyone to be his equal & treated them as such.
