JoAnn (Jody) Harmon, beloved wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma, and friend, passed away on June 19 in Mapleton, Utah, of causes incident to age. We will miss her energy, her music, and especially her laugh.

JoAnn was born in Salt Lake City on Feb. 18, 1930, to Kenneth M. Neilson and Dorothy Dahlstrom Neilson, and was the oldest of four children. She graduated from South High and attended the University of Utah. She married her high school sweetheart, Norris L. Harmon, on June 30, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple. They have three daughters, Susan, Kris, and Kathy, ten grandchildren, and thirty-one great-grandchildren.

JoAnn studied music from a young age and began teaching piano at age 12. She continued to teach into her late 70s. She played at the Organ Loft in Salt Lake for 25 years, played organ for the Golden Eagles hockey team for 21 years, played for the Trappers baseball team, and performed at many other events.

She and Norris lived in Murray, Fillmore, Sandy, Plain City, and most recently resided in Spanish Fork for almost ten years. They loved travelling in their motor home, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors with their dogs, family, and friends.

JoAnn had a great affection for desert landscape and especially loved the red cliffs of Torrey, UT, and hiking the Grand Wash at Capitol Reef National Park. She enjoyed attending activities at the Spanish Fork Senior Center and celebrated her 80th birthday by taking a helicopter ride (with no doors!). She lived with bright enthusiasm and humor—it was hard to talk to her without laughing.

The family would like to express thanks to the nurses from Alpine Home Care and Hospice and many wonderful friends and neighbors who have helped with JoAnn's care.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her husband (Norris), daughter (Kathy), sister (Connie), brothers (Roger and Bruce), and cousin (Dick). She is survived by daughters Susan (Lon) Heiner of Mapleton and Kris Starkey of Willard, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, June 24, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in the Wolf Hollow 1st Ward Chapel, 1180 East 1240 South, Spanish Fork, Utah. Family and friends may call on Thursday evening, June 23, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Walker Funeral Home, 187 S. Main Street, Spanish Fork or on Friday morning at the church from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to services. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery.
