CIVIL WAR

On September 16, 1864 Andrew was a teamster living in Sugar Creek Township, Greene County, OH. He went to Xenia, Oh and enlisted as a Private, Company K, 44th United States Colored Infantry for one year service.

Action at Dalton, GA, October 13, 1864.
Battle of Nashville, TN, December 15-16.
Pursuit of Hood to the Tennessee River December 17-28.
Post and garrison duty at Chattanooga, TN, in District of East Tennessee, and in the Dept. of Georgia till April, 1866.
Mustered out at the end of his contract September 15, 1865.

Andrew and his wife Tobitha lived in Xenia, OH after the war with their children; Cornelius, James, Mary, Elizabeth, and John.

Gravesite Details

Emancipation Records in Greene Co., OH do not include Andrew, but the family of James and Betsey Battles includes Samuel, who is presumed to be his brother. They were freed in Campbell Co., VA from 1831 to 1834.
