U.S. Congressman. He was a cotton planter and served as a U.S. Army officer during the War of 1812. After the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar about 1815 and commenced to practice law in Louisville, Georgia. He was a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1814-15) and elected as a Jacksonian to the Twenty-third Congress, serving (1833-35). In 1841, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-seventh Congress, serving until 1843). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a Georgia Superior Court Judge, from 1845, until his death age 60.
