U.S. Congressman. He was a member of the Vermont State Militia and served during the War of 1812. After the war, he studied theology in Philadelphia, graduated from Columbian College Washington, D.C., in 1821, was ordained a minister and preached as pastor of the Georgia Baptist Church Vermont, for over forty years. He was a member of the Vermont State House of Representatives, (1826-35, 38-40, 47-49, 51, 61-62), served in the Vermont State Senate, in (1841, 43, 45) and was secretary of Vermont State, in 1841. In 1853, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirty-third Congress and reelected as an Opposition Party candidate to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was commissioner of Franklin County, Vermont, (1861-62), moved to Sycamore, Illinois, in 1867 and continued his ministerial duties until his death.
