According to DAR records, John was the son of Jacob Smith & Barbara Ludwig.

John married Susanna Sprankle, daughter of Frederick Sprankle & Anna Margaretha ("Margaret") Biegel.

John & Susanna had 11 children. Their dates of birth are recorded in the Smith Bible. Those 11 children are: Frederick Sprankle; Margaret Bechtel (Phillippi), John R.; Susanna Margaret (Smith); Jacob Sprankle; Mary Ann (Henry); Barbara Elizabeth (Mowell); Emily Jane (Lobough); George S.; Maria E. (Bancroft); & William Sharrott. Susanna Margaret and John R. were twins.

John & Susanna lived in Mahoning Twp., Indiana Co., PA at the time of the 1830 census. In 1840 & 1850, they were enumerated in Young Twp., Jefferson Co., PA. The 1860 census finds them in McCalmont Twp., Brown's Mills P.O., Jefferson Co., PA (McCalmont Twp. was formed from Young Twp.). At this point they have not been located on the 1870 census. In 1880, Susanna was living with her daughter, Margaret Phillippi, in Winslow, Jefferson Co., PA.

Susanna died in 1888 in Winslow, Jefferson Co. She is buried at Syphrit (AKA Paradise) Cemetery, Reynoldsville, Jefferson Co., PA.

John died 18 Mar 1876. Some descendants suggest he died in Plumville, Indiana Co., PA and others that he died in Leesville, Henry Co., MO. Should you have information showing where John died and/or is buried, please let us know.

We also are seeking documentation for John's full name. He is just plain John Smith in the family Bible. Some descendants indicate his full name was John Simeon Peter Smith. Interestingly, Jefferson Co. Deed records show his name as John Smith S.P. Son Jacob's obituary calls him John Smith, J.P. Could those initials, indicating perhaps he was a justice of the peace and/or held some other office, have morphed into the middle name Simeon Peter?
