U.S. Congressman, Attorney. Born near White Oak in Rutherford County, North Carolina, he moved to Spartanburg, South Carolina with his parents when he was a child. Jones attended private schools and the District Academy in Spartanburg. He graduated from Princeton College in 1840 and from the law department at Harvard University in 1843. He traveled in Europe for two years before returning to South Carolina and was admitted to the bar in 1846 to practice as an attorney in Spartanburg. The following year, Jones moved to New York City and resumed his legal profession there until he moved to Newport, Kentucky in 1849. He became a member of the Kentucky Legislature representing Campbell County and served from 1853 until 1855. Even though he opposed secession of the Southern states, he was arrested in 1862 during the Civil War as a Southern sympathizer and was imprisoned for three months at the Newport Barracks in Kentucky and at Camp Chase in Columbus, Ohio. After the war, he was elected as a Democrat to represent Kentucky's 6th District in the United States House of Representatives and served from 1867 to 1871 and again from 1875 to 1877. During his final term in Congress, he was the chairman on the Committee of Railways and Canals. He was not a candidate for renomination in 1876 and resumed his legal practice. He died at his residence in Newport in 1887 when he was 68 years old. His grandfather, George Jones, was a native of Maryland and an officer for the United States Army during the Revolutionary War.
