US Congressman. He pursued an academic courses in the legal field, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841 and commenced practice in Lexington, Missouri. He was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives (1848-52), then relocated to Hopkinsville, Kentucky and engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1855, he was elected as a candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving until 1857. He declined to be a candidate for reelection, to serve as president of the Henderson and Nashville Railroad. In his later years, he devoted his life to his large landed estates interst until his death at age 67.
