Attended West Point Military and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Cavalry, Class of 1893. He was assigned to Troop G, 3rd US Cavalry.

He saw service during the Spanish American War, in Cuba with the Cavalry Division and then was assigned as a Major to the 43rd US Volunteers in the Philippine Island, 1899 - 1903. Participating in the Philippine Insurrection, he was awarded the Silver Star for his actions. He also served as the governor of Leyte.

He taught at West Point twice during his career. From 1911 to 1915 he was assigned as Army Advisor of Cavalry to the New York National Guard. He was the mentor for Squadron A Cavalry and the 1st Cavalry, NYNG.

From 1916 - 1917 he served once more in the Philippine Islands.

World War 1, commander of the 172nd Brigade, 86th Division. Landed in France August 1918 and returned to the States, November 1918.

Awards, Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Honor and Order of the Crown of Italy.

He was a prolific writer on military leadership.

Post Military, he was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury ( April 1, 1925 - August 1, 1927 )in charge of Prohibition enforcement.

President of Guardian Investment Trust; president of the rubber Institute.
