U.S. Congressman. After graduating from Yale College in 1806, he was a school teacher for a few years, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1811 and commenced practice law in Madison, New York. He moved to Batavia, New York, in 1815 and continued the practice of law. In 1827, he was elected to the Twentieth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of David E. Evans, reelected as an Anti-Masonic candidate to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed practicing law and was presiding judge of New York Genesee County Court, (1841-46).
