Elizabeth Riggs was the daughter of John Riggs, an early settler of Ohio County, Virginia, now Marshall County, WV. In addition to Elizabeth, John Riggs was the father of Samuel, Mary, Rebecca, Caroline, and Cynthia Riggs. Elizabeth Riggs married Hiram Cockayne in the fall of 1835. The couple decided to move to Burlington, Iowa circa 1841. They established a farm in Flint River Township where they raised their family.
