Martha Adams "Toni" Northern was born in Hopkinsville, KY to Ben S. Adams, a former Kentucky State Senator and Commissioner of Agriculture, and his wife Mildred Stone Adams. She graduated from Hopkinsville High School and Murray State University. She married Max W. Northern in 1963. Together, they had two children, Ben and Anne. They lived in Kentucky, Nashville, Chattanooga, Memphis and finally settled in Murfreesboro, TN in 1979 where they made their home for the remainder of their lives.
Toni was a beloved staff member at Oakland High School for many years. She was a loving, supportive mother to her children and dearly cherished by her four grandchildren.
