He joined the US Navy in 1938 and as a result was serving on board the Battleship USS Tennessee at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii on December 7, 1941. He spent eight years aboard the USS Tennessee attaining the rank of CPO. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "Meritorious Service" against the enemy during 45 months of sea duty. He participated in fourteen major operations, including the great naval victory of Sergio Straits.
Larry retired from the Navy in 1958 and spent the rest of his working years as an officer at Washington State Correction Center at Monroe, WA.
He married his first wife Faye in 1947 and started their family with her two young sons. Together they had three more sons before she passed away in 1963. He married again in 1967 to Winnie Surdyk and they joined their two families together. All together Larry had a family of two adopted sons, three biological sons, two step-sons and two step-daughters.
Larry took great enjoyment and peace of mind from gardening and fishing. But the high lights of his retirement years were his many travels all across the United States attending USS Tennessee Reunions, renewing old friendships and making new ones. He belonged to Snohomish Co. Chapter of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Fleet Reserve, Knights of Columbus, St. Vincent DePaul, VFW, and Eagles and was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.
