My father, William Garrett, entered the U.S. Army at Ft. Sam Houston in 1933 with Gradie Poland of Tarkington Prairie, Texas. They both went to Schofield Barracks in Honolulu, Hawaii with the Signal Corps. They left the U.S. Army in 1937 and my father went home to Tarkington with Gradie. (My father was from Hillsboro, Texas). He and Gradie got a job with a construction firm that was building roads in Liberty County. They weren't really suited for that work, so my father went back to Hillsboro to help his father on their farm. After two years, my father went back into the U.S. Army and served 20 years. He passed away in March 2011 at the age of 95. My father told me many stories about Gradie and I have several pictures of Gradie from their days in Hawaii.
