John Erastus Harvey had some remarable experiences. While a student at the Normal Chool, he was accidently shot through the body by one of his classmantes, Oscar Roles. The wound was exceedingly serious and it is remarkable that he escaped from death. While engaged in repairing his barn in 1908, he was struck by a piece of timerber and very dangerously wounded. His physicians were hopeless for a recovery and directed that he be brought to Hinton Hospital. He was unable to be transported by any conveyance except a skiff. He was placed in the skiff and started for Hinton after dark, a distance of 20 miles and he was brought down the river all the way after night, lying in the bottom of the boat, one man rowing. he reached the hospital at 11 o'clock that same night and thus his life was saved. He was brought through the rapids at the mouth of Greenbrier, Bluestone and Warford as well as other dangerous places and with no moonlight.
