John was killed in a mining accident, in Amsterdam, Ohio.
He was struck by a piece of slate, after he went to the mine to tell his co-workers goodbye. He and his family were moving away. He is buried in City Cemetery in Alliance, Stark County, Ohio, next to his wife Josephine.
