Killed by bushwhackers, including Charles "Fletch" Taylor, Arch Clements, Peyton Long, and James Bissett. Bond was said to have been the leader of the group of men who nearly killed Dr. Samuel (the boys step-father), and "nearly beat Jesse James to a pulp" when they came to the James farm looking for Frank James early in the Civil War.

Bond had been a Private in the 6th Regiment Cavalry, State Militia Volunteers when he was taken prisoner at Lone Jack, Missouri, on Aug. 16, 1862. He was discharged Sept. 21, 1862, by Special Order #58, and sent home.
