RALPH BAXTER, 72 Boston - Ralph Baxter, 72, Main Street, Newport, died March 12 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Boston. He was born March 17, 1914, in Altona, N.Y., the son of Charles and Mary (Partlow) Baxter, and had lived in Newport for the past 60 years. Mr. Baxter, who attended Newport schools, had been employed in the town's shoe shop during his working years. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Phillipines. He leaves a brother, Kenneth Drew, East Hampton, two sisters, Mellie (Petrin) Poirer, Kissimmee, Fla., and Alice Champagne, Highgate Springs, Vt., and nieces, nephews and cousins. A gravesite service took place March 16 at Pine Grove Cemetery, Newport, with the Rev. Norman Hieman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Newport, officiating. The family has suggested that donations in his memory be made to the American Cancer Society, in care of Carol K. Wilson, 7 Cindy Ave., Claremont, 03743. Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
