Though William Hood was born and lived in Indiana, he enlisted for the Civil War in Danville, Illinois, June 10, 1861. He served three years in the 25th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company B. He mustered out September 5, 1864, at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL.

Federal censuses indicate that William A and Mary Ann Hood were married after the Civil War and resided in Indiana where the following children were born:
Alonzo (1868);
Rose (1870);
Francisco (1873);
Vernon (1879);
Oscar, aka Asa (1880).

The family moved to Dickinson County, Kansas, probably circa 1890±.
