DEATH CLAIMS MRS. HENRY ESCH, SR., A PIONEER RESIDENT
WIFE OF FOUNDER OF ESCH COMPANY DIES AT ADVANCED AGE OF 81,
AT HER RESIDENCE HERE SINCE 1848
Mrs. Elise Esch, wife of Henry Esch Sr., founder and head of the Henry Esch
company, died at the family home at 603 North Ninth street at 10 o’clock last
night at the advanced age of 81 years. Her husband, who is 83, survives her
and had Mrs. Esch lived until Sept. 26, the couple would have celebrated their
diamond wedding, having been married sixty years ago on that date.
Mrs. Esch’s death was due to general decline caused by advanced age and for
some time she had been in feeble health, but she had failed rapidly of late
and death was not unexpected though a shock of family and friends. The end
came peacefully and calmly, Mrs. Esch sinking into death as one falling
asleep.
The death of Mrs. Esch removes one of the pioneer residents of the county and
a woman who during her life had been privileged to witness the growth of
Manitowoc from a settlement to a metropolitan city, born at Al____, province
of Rhine, Aug. 17, 1933, Mrs. Esch, whose maiden name was Elise Bierhaus, came
to Manitowoc with her family in 1848, when she was fifteen years of age and had
made her home here since. She was married to Mr. Esch in 1854 and with her
husband and family has been prominent in the city’s coal and business life for
more than half a century. Mrs. Esch, as the true wife and helpmate contributed
to the success achieved by her husband and family, rearing three sons who have
become among the leading business men of the city.
Besides her aged husband, Mr. Esch is survived by five children, William, Henry,
Jr., and Charles; Mrs. Rusticholz, this city, and Mrs. Edward Stueby of Boston,
Mass. Seventeen grandchildren also survive to mourn her death.
Mrs. Esch was a member of the German Reformed church and until forced by declin-
ing health to withdraw from the activities of the church, was prominent in the
organization.
The funeral of Mrs. Esch will be held Tuesday afternoon from her home at 603
North Ninth Street.
