UNTOLD SORROW VISITS THE HOMES OF CAVE IN VICTIMS AFTER TRAGEDY

Sorrow of untold weight fell with stunning force upon two homes Monday afternoon when Reinhardt De Sombre, 39, of Erdman, and Gustave Arndt, 33, of 1234 St. Clair avenue, Sheboygan, were instantly killed in a cave-in at a county clay pit north of the Lower Falls road and west of the Sheboygan river.
Tons of frozen earth fell upon the men as they were performing their duty, digging out clay which was being used to fill in approaches to the newly constructed Sheboygan river bridge just south of where the fatalities occurred. Their lives were crushed out as they were running to escape their fate.

Mrs. Gustave Arndt, 1234 St. Clair avenue, was in despair when a Press reporter went to the home.
The heartbroken mother paced the floor while her four-year-old son clung to her skirts, and a three-year-old daughter, innocently oh- to the tragedy and its serouisness, slept peacefully in the arms of a sympathetic neighbor.
Gustave Arndt, was born December 31, 1891 in the town of Rhine. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. August Arndt of the town of Rhine. Mr. Arndt resided in the town of Rhine until six months ago, when he and the little family came to Sheboygan to make their future home. They operated a forty acre farm there before coming to the city.
About seven years ago, Mr. Arndt married Miss Theckla Henning, daughter of G. F. Henning of Erdman. His widow and two small children, Elroy aged 4, and LaVerne, aged 3, together with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Arndt, four sisters, Mrs. Hugo Imig of the town of Mosel, Mrs. Lawrence Buechel of the town of Rhine, Mrs. Herman Kattrich of the town of Rhine, and Mrs. Walter Kasten of the town of Plymouth and two brothers, Huldrich and Melvin. Of the town of Rhine, survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at the late home Friday and at the Reformed Church in the town of Rhine. The Rev. Mr. Haarman will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
