Mary Belle was the daughter of Robert Washington Burgess & Ida Estelle Purdy. She married first to Jesse Jones, and second to Ernest West. On January 7, 1989, in the Methodist Church at Conrad, Iowa, she married third to Fred Ellsworth Coulter (1912-2004), son of Fred Earl Coulter & Verna Opal Kurtz.
Mary had no children, but helped raise her Burgess nephews: Gene, Ron, and Phil. In later years, macular degeneration robbed her of her eyesight. She bore her blindness with quiet Christian dignity. Her middle name was appropriate: Mary was a lovely Southern belle.
