The name Fairbairn comes from his grandmother's second husband. Gardner's grandfather, Joseph Dalton, a native of England, was a tailor in Milwaukee and died of typhoid fever on 8 Oct 1869 (according to Forest Home Cemetery records). The grandmother, Martha (nee Andrews), also a native of England, remarried in 1878 to Thomas Fairbairn. Gardner's father, George William Dalton, was raised from about age 10 by that step-father. Martha and Thomas Fairbairn are buried at Pilgrim's Rest Cemetery in Milwaukee.
