John Barry married Eleanor Wade, a daughter of Zephaniah Wade and Verlinda Pottinger Wade of Fairfax Co., VA.

John's wife, Eleanor, died about 1770, per The George Washington Papers, leaving a son, William, as her only heir. John managed the business affairs of his son, William, who was a minor at the time of his mother's death. William Barry had inherited half of the Wade farm after his mother's death. George Washington attempted to buy the Barry portion of the farm for many years as he had purchased the other half of the farm from Eleanor's sister, Verlinda/Valinda Wade, in 1770.

John's date of death is based on the fact that there was an inventory of his estate in 1776.
