US Congressman. Elected to represent Maine's 6th and 7th Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1829 to 1837. He was the son of Leonard Jarvis, Sr. and Susan Scott, and grandson of Leonard Jarvis and Sarah Church. Leonard was born in Boston, attended local elementary schools, and then graduated from Harvard in 1800, and moved to France where he lived for sixteen years. When he moved to Main in 1816, he married Mary Hubbard Greene on August 15 in Boston. After Mary died in November of 1841, he married Anna Howard Spooner in 1844. He became the sheriff of Hancock, Maine from 1821 to 1829, and a collector of customs for Penobscot from 1829 to 1831. He was elected to the twenty-first Congress, serving from 1829 to 1837. He was the chairman of the United States House Committee on Naval Affairs during the twenty-fourth congress. He was also a Navy agent for the port of Boston from 1838 to 1841. In 1835, Leonard challenged a Francis O.J. Smith to a duel, but Mr Smith declined.
