US Congressman. Born in Monmouth, Maine, he graduated from Waterville College, in 1843, taught classes at Kents Hill Seminary and engaged in the grocery business in Skowhegan, Maine. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1852 and commenced to practice law business in Skowhegan, Maine. He was land agent for the State of Maine, (1860-63). During the Civil War, he served as a Major in the Union Army and was paymaster in the Bureau of Freedmen and Abandoned Lands Alabama, (1864-65). After the war, he was a member of the constitutional convention of Alabama and upon the readmission of Alabama to the Union, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving (1868-69). He died at age 52 in Montgomery, Alabama.
