During combat in the densely wooded Vosges mountains located in Northern France in late Oct 1944 when the 442 RCT was sent in to rescue the Lost Battalion (141st Infantry Regiment from the 36th Texas Division) SSgt Toe Nakaishi was severely wounded in the leg, he would later receive the Purple Heart medal. Of the nearly 200 men of Co I, 3rd Battalion about 8 were left unscathed and able to walk under their own power after this battle.
