Etta Fowler Pickett was the youngest daughter of John Simeon Fowler and Nancy Elizabeth Jones. Considered a belle in her day, she caught the eye of Alexander Stephens Pickett and they married in about 1902. They were blessed with a son, Fred Horris in January 1903.
Unfortunately, that happiness was short-lived as Fred died the same year, in June. She had another baby that also died in infancy.
Happily, Alec and Etta had two more sons: Ira Henry in 1907 and Waymond Theodore in 1909. The two little boys were very close, with Waymond idolizing his big brother. Etta doted on her sons.
Tragically, in 1916 little Ira was hit by an automobile. This loss was too much to bear, and Etta was never the same. She slowly lost her mind.
Etta lived for a while with her only living son Waymond and his dear wife Emily, who adored her mother-in-law. Waymond and Emily Pickett had two little daughters. Eventually, home construction work dried up in Georgia, so Waymond took his young family out to California where the job opportunities were excellent. Etta then went to live with her sister Mintie Burgess on Covington Road.
Etta's condition deteriorated and she was hospitalized at Central State Psychiatric Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia. She lived long enough to meet her first two great-grandchildren in 1954. She died three years later.

"And with the morn those angel faces smile
Which I have loved long since and lost awhile."
~John Henry Newman
