Double Pneumonia Takes Aged Couple: Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Sage, Aten, Die Only Four Days Apart: Double pneumonia caused the death last week of one of the oldest and most respected couples in the northwest part of the county, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Sage of Aten, who died only four days apart. Mr. Sage died at the home at 8:15 last Wednesday morning after a week's illness. He would have been 80 years old on March 21. Mrs. Sage, 79 years old, succumbed to the same ailment at 7:05 a.m., Sunday. Her condition was so serious she was not told of the death of her husband. Funeral services were held for Mr. Sage Friday afternoon and interment was in the Aten Cemetery. His wife was buried beside him following services Tuesday afternoon. Rev. E. J. Menaugh of the Salem Evangelical church was in charge of both services, held at the Aten Congregational church. Vocal numbers at the final rites were presented by Sol Walker and Mrs. John Behrens with Mrs. Walker accompanying at the organ. A host of friends in the vicinity, who had loved and respected the aged couple during their long residence in Aten, paid final tribute to them at the services. Pioneers of Cedar County, Mr. and Mrs. Sage had lived in and near Aten for the past 36 years. Mr. Sage had been crippled for a number of years due to hardning of the arteries. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary about eight years ago. They were the parents of nine children, two of whom preceded them in death. Survivors are James, Herbert, George, Mrs. Orville Avenell, Mrs. William Jackson, all of Crofton vicinity, Mrs. Eva Ford, Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Mrs. Lee McKnelly, Sioux Falls, S.D. and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The also reared two of their grandchildren, Mrs. Leonard Layne and Mrs. Roy Clark of Yankton. Mrs. Sage also leaves a sister, Mrs. Anna Kelly of Terrance, Minnesota, and a brother Charles at Augusta, Kansas. This obituary was prepared by a niece, Mrs. John Nelson of Aten.
