US Congressman. He was elected to represent Maine's 3rd District in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1827 to 1831. From 18181 to 1819, he served as a Member of the Maine State Legislature. He was a collector of customs at the port of Bath from 1820 to 824. He had limited formal education but was a merchant. Wingate's uncle, Paine Wingate, was a U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, and Justice of the Supreme Court, all of New Hampshire.
