MORGAN, Cmdr. Corwin F. "Smiley," U.S. Navy, retired, 89, of Tampa, passed away April 3, 2007. He was a native of Richmond, Mo., and moved to Florida in 1923. After graduating from Pensacola High School in 1936, he attended the University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla., where he was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He became known as "Smiley" while serving in the U.S. Navy, 1941-1954. He was a member of Torpedo Squadron Eight and later commanding officer of Torpedo Squadron 35 aboard the USS Chenengo, receiving both Presidential and Navy Unit Citations. He was awarded the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC). He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years Helen A. "Nancy" in 1999. He is survived by his children, Margaret "Markey" Morgan of Los Angeles, Calif., Maria "Mimi" Morgan of San Francisco, Calif., and husband, Dave Terry, Nancy Sureda of Tampa, Richard Morgan of Tampa and Christopher Morgan of Tampa and wife, Laura; and grandchildren, Ellen Terry of Santa Cruz, Calif., and Lysette Sureda, Daniel Morgan and Charlotte Morgan all of Tampa. A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2007, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, with Monsignor Laurence E. Higgins, Pa., pastor, officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Disabled American Veterans, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301.
