U.S. Congressman. He was a merchant and shipbuilder at Phippsburg, Maine and trustee of Bowdoin College, Maine, (1796-1842). He was member of the Main State House of Representatives, (1797-1808, 10, 13-14), served in the Main State Senate. (1804, 15-17), judge of the court of common pleas in 1810 and served on the General Court of Massachusetts. In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress and Seventeenth Congress, serving until 1823. After leaving Congress, he was postmaster of Phippsburg, Maine, (1819-24) and appointed as a collector of customs at Bath, Maine, in 1824.
