US Congressman. Born in what was then the town of Pownalborough in Massachusetts (now Wiscasset, Maine), he attended Harvard University, graduating in 1791. After reading law he was entered into the Massachusetts State Bar, and commenced a law practice in Winslow, Massachusetts. In 1807 he began his rise in public office with an appointment as an examiners of counselors and attorneys for Kennebec County. He was then elected to the Massachusetts State legislature, serving a year's term in 1814. He was then elected as a Federalist to the United States House of Representatives, and served representing first Massachusett's 5th, then the 18th Congressional districts. He served two terms from 1815 to 1819, and was unsuccessful in an attempt to be elected for a third term. He would resume his law practice in Winslow, where he resided for the rest of his life, passing away there in 1854 at age eighty-six.
