James Berwyn Howett, of Dover, died at his home on Sunday, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Mr. Howett was a 1945 graduate of Conrad High School in Woodcrest.
He retired in 1983 from All-American Engineering in Wilmington, after more than 30 years of service.
He was very active with the Brandywine Motorsports Club in Wilmington from 1963-1983.
In 1975, he was appointed by the Governor to serve on the refurbishing committee for the Old State House in Dover.
Jim was an artist who was known for his paintings of local scenery. His first noted accomplishment was his painting of Walker's Mill in Wilmington for which he received three honorable mentions in local competitions. Jim also illustrated and published a sketchbook of churches of Eastern Sussex County.
Jim and his wife loved to travel and they visited 48 state capitals.
Mr. Howett was predeceased by his parents, Norman Lewis Howett, Sr. and Natalie "Powell" Howett; and his sister, Beverly Howett.
Mr. Howett is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Peggy Howett, of Dover; two daughters, Lynda Leahy and Dan Cowgill, of Middletown and Laurie and Dave Guhl, of Bear; five grandchildren, Kyle, Caitlin and Dillon Leahy and Shelby and Aaron Guhl; a brother, Norman Lewis Howett, Jr. and his wife, Annabelle of Rehoboth Beach; and three nephews.
