U.S. Continental Congressman. He was Sheriff of Albany County, New York, (1755-59) and Deputy to the Provincial Convention in 1775. He was a member of the first and second councils of safety (1777-78), served in the New York State Senate (1778-90), receiver of Albany, New York, (1778-79) and the first postmaster of Albany, in 1783. In 1787, he was elected a member of the US Continental Congress, serving until 1888. After his term, he was elected Mayor of Albany, New York, in 1790 and served until his death at age 71.
