TX. The middle of nine children, he was born to John Lee and Essie
Trueblood Van Zant on November 5, 1915, on the family farm near Everton,
Arkansas.
He graduated from Hendrix College in 1942 and from Perkins School
Theology at Southern Methodist University in 1945.
He was preceded in death by Mary Mildred Simpson Van Zant, his wife of 61 years, his parents,
two sisters and five brothers. He is survived by his son Jim Van Zant and his wife Debbie, their
children Kerry and Emily Van Zant, and by his daughter Sue Cox, her husband Ralph, their son
David Cox and his wife Jennifer. Also surviving him are his sister Merle Phillips, sister-in-law
Emeline Thaxton and a large extended family.
Funeral services were held May 11, 2009 at Restland’s Wildwood Chapel. Dr. Don Benton
officiated.
