Effingham- Mrs. Clayton (Irene Crawford) Slifer, 88, of Effingham died at 3:23 a.m. Friday, June 14, 1991, at St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital, Effingham.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Centenary United Methodist Church, Effingham, with burial in Patoka Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnson Funeral Home, Effingham. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer disease research.

Mrs. Slifer was born October 24, 1902, in Fayette County, the daughter of John and Sadie (Lancaster) Crawford. She married Clayton Noble Slifer and they lived in the Beecher City and Shumway area before moving to Effingham for more than 50 years.

Mrs. Slifer taught for many years in the Effingham school system at the elementary, junior high and high school levels. She attended Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and began her teaching career at a one-room country school in Fayette County. She graduate cum laude from Eastern Illinois University at Charleston with a bachelor's degree and also did post-graduate work. During her tenure at Central Junior High, she coached many students to honors and awards in speech and writing.

Mrs. Slifer was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, PEO Chapter FA for more than 50 years and was past president. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was a past worth matron. For many years she was active in several other civic and social organizations.

She also was a past member of the Effingham Classroom Teachers Association, the Illinois Education Association and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Centeary United Methodist Church.

Surviving are her son and daugher-in-law, James and Beverly Slifer of Elgin; three grandchildren, Barry Slifer, Mrs. Robert (Ann) Bond, both of Springfield, and Kevin Slifer of Urbana.

She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and one sister.
