William Anderson Garton was born 10 Apr 1834 to James K Garton and Amelia Shumate. At the age of 15 he was orphaned, his parents dying of Cholera in 1849 two days apart. The 1850 census does not show him, but his other siblings were with other family members.

On 18 Sep 1853 he married Catherine Atteberry (daughter of David Atteberry and Mary "Polly" Adams) in Tazewell Co., Illinois.

William and Catherine moved to Vinton, Benton, Iowa where five of their children were born.

On the 9 Aug 1862, William signed up for the Civil War in Co. A, 28th Iowa Vol. Inft. being
5'8" , Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion.

However, he deserted and came back home and the government was after him for desertion, but the war ended and he was never found or punished.

William and Catherine then moved to Wilber, Saline, Nebraska five more children were born.

He died 31 Aug 1914 in Wilber, Saline, Nebraska, but is buried in DeWitt, Saline, Nebraska in the Oak Grove Cemetery.
