ALLEN, WILLIAM R. "BILL" - age 81, of Lake City, passed away at the St. Mary's Hospice Center early Sunday morning, October 7, 2001.

Mr. Allen was a former Mayor and long time member of the Board of Commissioners of the town of Lake City. He was a World War II Veteran, serving in the Philippines, a Coal Miner and Mason. Mr. Allen also served as custodian of the Lake City Elementary School for many years, where he became a Father /Grandfather role model with humor and joyous delight to hundreds of children as well as the staff. He was a member of the Main Street Baptist Church, where he was an interim choir leader, former Sunday School Teacher and church custodian. One of Bill's greatest callings was as "Mr. Fix it" for Lake City and the surrounding areas of home appliances of leaky plumbing and other home equipment emergencies of his friends and fellow citizens responding both day and night.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Victoria Allen; brother, Carl Allen (WWII), and sister, Georgia Leach.

Survivors: faithful and supportive wife of almost 53 years, Mary Taylor Allen of Lake City; children, Nancy Allen Thrasher of Lake City, Terry Lynn Allen of Lake City, and Vickie Allen Markus and husband Jimmy of Valley Village, Calif.; grandchildren, Travis Thrasher, Terry Allen Jr., Patricia Allen and Benjamin Markus; great grandchildren, Thyshad Thrasher and Tionne' Thrasher; sister, Hazel Allen of Lake City; brothers, Ernest Allen and Charles Allen and wife, Nellie of Lake City; brothers-in-law, J. E. Taylor and wife Gladys of Lake City, Norris Taylor and wife Helen of Powell, Mack Taylor and wife Edith of Lake City, Walter Marian Taylor and wife Veronica, of Edgewood, Md., Herman Taylor of Lake City; sisters-in-law, Faye Shetterly and husband Ray of Edgewood, Md., and Dot Taylor of Clinton, Tenn. , and a host of nieces, nephews, and many many special friends.

Visitation 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 8, 2001, at the Cox-Martin Funeral Home. Funeral service 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, 2001, at the Main Street Baptist Church with Rev. Don Martin, Rev. Wayne Phillips and Curtis Sexton, M.D. officiating. Interment to follow the funeral service at the Glen Foust Cemetery, Lake City, Tenn.

His special smile, unique humor and giving nature will be missed by family, friends, and the town of Lake City. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Main Street Family Life Center, P. O. Box 405, Lake City, TN 37769. Cox-Martin Funeral Home, in charge of arrangements.
