Martha Anne Hait was born on Feb 12th 1920 in Coffeyville, Kansas the oldest of three daughters born to Harry and Bessie (Price) Hait. Her parents divorced after her graduation from Bartlesville High School and as part of the divorce agreement she attended Sullins Junior College in Bristol Virginia for one year where she could major in music (piano and organ) and take horseback riding lessons. Her mother, sisters and grandmother moved to Norman Oklahoma where she would attend the University of Oklahoma and major in Music Education. She pledged Delta Gamma Sorority and graduated with degree of Bachelor of Music Education. To increase her employment options, she took additional courses in Elementary Education and obtained a teaching position for 4th to 7th graders in Newkirk, Oklahoma. Her employment was interrupted by the start of WWII and the next year she taught in Moore, Oklahoma.

While visiting her Uncle Monte Price in California in 1936 she met her future husband, Oren Christian. He had joined the Navy in 1936 during the midst of the depression and upon the completion of his enlistment in 1938 he attended Los Angeles City College. Called back into service shortly before Pearl Harbor he received training in multi- engine aircraft and graduated as an Ensign. During this period Oren would make several trips to visit Ann during various leaves. Oren was deployed to the Caribbean as a pilot of a PBM (Patrol Bomber) in anti-submarine warfare. He would later receive the Distinguished Flying Cross in recognition of his service. War time makes for interesting marriages, and this was like many of them by pulling things together quickly and they were married on April 15, 1944, at the Presbyterian Church in Norman with her youngest sister Patty the only attendant. After a short honeymoon Oren flew back to Naval Air Station Harvey Point, Hertford NC while Anne visited her sister Mary Swift in Evanston, Il. After fifteen months, Oren received orders to a graduate course in electronics at the Post Graduate School at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The war was coming to end just two months later and on May 29th, 1948, Oren earned a degree of Master of Electronics and Engineering from the Academy. The first child Ann Louise (Annie Lou) Christian was born on Oct 27, 1946, at the Naval Hospital on Navy Day and baptized in the Naval Chapel. A true child of the Navy. Chris as Oren was called was sent to the Navy Department in D.C. While there Randolph (Randy) Christian was born on April 12, 1949, in Bethesda, MD.

Anne became involved in Grace Episcopal Church in Alexandra, VA and offered to teach Kindergarten there. Chris's next tour took him to Naval Air Station Patuxent, MD and Anne taught third grade for three years. In 1955, The Christians took a tour of duty away from the East coast but still on the water in Memphis, TN where Chris was Superintendent of Electronic Training NAS in Memphis, TN. Anne purchased a Conn Organ and taught organ and piano to children of Navy families. In 1958 the family moved to Norfolk, VA where Chris was an Electronic Officer on the staff of the Commander, Fleet Air Wings. Atlantic Fleet. In response to new Federal desegregation laws, the Norfolk Schools closed rather than desegregate and Annie Lou and Randy enrolled in private schools. In the fall the schools reopened, and Annie Lou entered the ninth grade in public schools while Randy continued in private schools. In 1961 Chris was scheduled to be transferred back to Washington and while returning from picking up the kids at camp he was involved in a near fatal car crash that required three months in the hospital. Chris retired after 20 years in 1963 and Anne and the family moved to California where Chris went to work for Lockheed Aircraft Company and Anne went on to developing a full-time teaching career. Anne developed an interest in teaching mentally challenge children and earned a MA, Education Special and Rehabilitation from California State University at Northridge just four blocks from their home. Both children would finally graduate from local high schools. Chris left Lockheed after 10 years and became an account Executive at Dean Whitter then later as a real estate broker with Coldwell Banker. In 1979 he received an MS from CSUN and taught finance there for one year. After teaching in the classroom, Anne spent three years as the classroom teacher in a Mobile Diagnostic Center evaluating learning problems of children and then writing an educational plan for each of them. After Anne's 17-year teaching career ended, she was free to pursue one of her passions of discovering her family history in England. After seven years of research, she published her first book: The Search for Holmes, Robson, Hind, Steele and Graham Families of Cumberland and Northumberland. There was no internet for her to search so personal journeys and examination of Parish Records were required, an arduous task. Chris commented at one family reunion, the family chart ran 64 feet down the wall from one room to another. In 1991 Anne published Volume I of the Setchfield/Holmes/Hait/Family History series entitled: The Setchfield and Holmes Families of Whittlesey Cambridgeshire England: A Social and Family History 1660-1990. In 1993. Anne Published Volume II entitled The William and Alice (Setchfield) Holmes and Carlos E. Hait Families in Michigan, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Colorado 1840 -1992.

Anne continued to work on further volumes by traveling around the US making friends with distant relatives. She often related that history to close family members at family reunions.

Oren (Chris) Randolph Christian died on Sept 26th, 2003, while Anne died just a few days later October 2nd, 2003. Anne's genealogical contributions to her family's history will continue to provide historical information for many years as her written works often appear for resale for future generations to study.

This story about Anne Hait Christian was prepared by John Resler Swift and drawn largely from her own work on the Hait Family. She was known to me as Aunt Anne.
