Mineral Pair Seeks $75,000 In Damage Suit
"After their claim was rejected by the Mineral County Commissioners, a Hawthorne couple filed a $75,000 damage suit here against Mineral County, the nurse in charge of the county hospital and a Hawthorne doctor.

Edward James Deering and his 69 year old wife Mary L., claim that Mrs. Deering suffered a fractured hip and may never be able to walk again because of the negligence of the defendants.

As well as Mineral County, the suit names Laura D. Merlino, superintendent of the hospital and Fr. E. F. Hanson, Hawthorne physician, as defendants.

According to the complaint, Mrs. Deering was admitted to the hospital last Jan 21 on the orders of her physician, Dr. Hanson. She was believed to be suffering from tuberculosis or Addisons Disease, the complaint continues.

Although she was in extremely weakened condition, Mrs. Deering was given no assistance when she found it necessary to leave her bed on the nights of January 24 and 25, the claim charges.

It is alleged that she fell both nights, the second time suffering a fractured hip, which is claimed may leave her permanently crippled.

County authorities, the nurse and Dr. Hanson are accused of negligence and charged with failing to provide proper care of the patient.

For Mrs. Deerings pain and suffering a total of $20,000 damages are sought. Mr. Deering asks for $15,000 to compensate for his wife's medical expenses and for the loss of her services and companionship.

The plaintiffs are represented by the Reno firm of McCarren, Rice, Wedge and Blakey."
