Louis Mathews, March 1, 1918-April 20, 2003
Louis F. Mathews, 85, died Sunday at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center-Vallejo of natural causes. Mr. Mathews was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and lived in Vallejo for 13 years. He was a machinist at Carter-Day Co. in Minnesota for 33 years, retiring in 1980. He was a WWII veteran who served for five years in the U. S. Army, earning a Bronze Star and the Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5555 in Richfield, Minnesota and Disabled American Veterans. He loved sports, coaching Little League, taking trips to Reno and vacations at a lakeside cabin in Brainerd, Minnesota.
Survivors include his wife, Winifred of Vallejo; son, Jeff, of Benicia; sisters, Muriel Baran and Evelyn Palmer, both of Minnesota; brothers, Douglas of Michigan and Robert of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Jason, Kelsey and Sarah Mathews and Robyn Tobias, all of Benicia; and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Fort Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis. Internment will follow. Arrangements were made by Twin Chapels Mortuary, Vallejo.
