Joseph A. Klein, 81, of Ottawa died July 10, 2003, in his home.

Mass will be at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Patrick's Church, Ottawa, with the Rev. Keith Walder officiating. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery, Ottawa, with military services.

Visitation will be 3-7 p.m. Sunday in Ottawa Funeral Home with prayers at 4 p.m. with the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Klein was born Oct. 2, 1921, in Thayer to Andrew and Mary (Sepesy) Klein. He married Pauline E. Grubaugh on July 21, 1945, in St. Patrick's Church, Ottawa.

He retired from Union Carbide lab after 35 years. He was one of the founders of Bakelite Ottawa Plastics Credit Union board of directors and was chief officer for 29 years. He was inducted into the Illinois Credit Union Hall of Fame. He served on the Ottawa United Fund Board and represented his area in the Bike Across the Magnificent Miles of Illinois for Chicago Lung Association.

He was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Knights of Columbus, Bakelite Local 129, American Legion Post 33, Ottawa VFW and Mendota Elks Club. He was treasurer of Union Carbide Old Timers.

He was a navigator in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II in the European Theater of Operations.

Survivors are his wife; one daughter, Jean (William) Faber Verndale, Minn.; two sons, Joseph (Elizabeth) Klein of Henry and James (Mary Lou) Klein of Ottawa; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Ann Klein; five brothers; and four sisters.

Pallbearers will be George, Daniel and George Allen Lukach, Andy Klein, Paul Muhlstadt and Mike Klachko.

Memorials may be directed to Community Hospice Program of Ottawa or St. Patrick's Grade School.
